Additional Information on New Functionality

Spelling Checker

This client now has the ability to spelling check FirstClass messages.  To enable this feature you must have the dictionaries installed.  These are found in a folder called Tools in your FirstClass Client folder.

To spell check a message select Edit->Check Spelling.

Toolbar and Status Bar

This client now has a Toolbar and Status Bar.

The Toolbar is a customisable area which is used to display buttons for access to menu commands.  It can be made to float, or can be docked to the top, bottom or sides of the window.  Items can be shown in small or large size, by text or by icon.

The Toolbar can turned on and off via View->Show Toolbar.  It can be customised via View->Customize Toolbar.

The Status Bar is a area which appears at the bottom of your screen which displays useful information about menu items as you select them.

The Status Bar can be turned on and off via View->Show Status Bar.

New Cross-platform Styled Editor

The styled editor used in the Mac client is now the cross-platform styled editor as also used in the Windows client.

Some of the items now supported are:

-  greater than 64 KB of text in message body
-  tabs

Client Extension Support

This client supports client extensions built with SoftArc's Client Extension Toolkit.

Client extensions are made available to the client via a new folder called Plugins under the FirstClass Client folder.

Supplied with this release are the following viewers built with the toolkit.

-  BMP
-  GIF
-  JPEG

Drag and Drop

This client now supports drag and drop.

Some of the items which can be handled with drag and drop are:

Attachments
-  These can be drag and dropped between FirstClass and the Finder.

Text
-  Text can be drag and dropped within messages and between messages.
-  Text can be drag and dropped between FirstClass and the Finder (if the Clipping Extension is installed).

Pictures
-  Pictures can be drag and dropped within FirstClass.
-  Pictures can be drag and dropped between FirstClass and the Finder (if the Clipping Extension is installed).
-  Pictures can be dragged between the Mac OS scrapbook and FirstClass.

Directory items
-  Names can be drag and dropped from the FirstClass Directory to message headers to address mail.
-  Names can be drag and dropped between the FirstClass Directory or messages and your Address Book lists.

Drag and Drill

This client now supports drag and drill.  Drag and drill is the ability to drag an item over another and linger over it to 'drill' down into that item.

The most obvious use for this is to say drag a message from your MailBox and linger over any personal folders you have.  This will drill into that folder and open it for you to allow you access to the folders beneath it without having to double-click them to open them.

New Directory and Addressing Support

This client supports the new Directory and addressing scheme when used against 3.5 FirstClass Servers.

This includes a new Directory lookup and Directory list window from which you can easily enter names into the To, Cc and Bcc fields of a message.  The new Directory lookup allows online filtering of items in the Directory list to show local, remote and/or conference names, and can be further filtered on a search pattern you enter.

FirstClass Personal Ready

This client is ready for use with the FirstClass Personal Server.

There are now a number of items under the Service menu which when used with FirstClass Personal Server allow you to work offline.

FirstClass Personal allows offline replication of messages and conference items.

Online Updating of Settings Files

This client allows online updating of settings files by option-clicking on a settings file attached to a message.  When this is done, all FirstClass resources from the settings file are downloaded and merged in with your current settings file.

Proxy Support

This client now supports firewalling the client through a SOCKS compatible proxy server.

Information about the proxy server can be entered under the Advanced Settings area on the Connection Setup form for any TCP/IP FCP file.

3D Look

This client now supports a 3D look.  It is off by default on the Mac client.

It can be turned on and off by selecting Edit->3D Look.

Other changes in this release over previous shipping version

-  Small icons appear beside all Directory items in messages and forms e.g. names, conferences, priv groups, etc.
-  Service->Private Chat now brings up a sub-menu of available chat types (as client extensions enable additional chat types).  The previous text based private chat is indicated as Text Chat in this sub-menu.
-  Pressing down arrow key now cycles between upper and lower panes in a message window.

Known Problems

-  No major known problems.
