New features/enhancements in this release since 5.506
Simple calendaring
This new FirstClass Client now provides support for simple calendaring when used with a FCIS/FCCC server version 5.700 or greater which has the Gold license installed.
Calendaring is enabled by a new Calendaring privilege.
Calendars are built as lists of event forms, which are then rendered into appropriate month, week (default) and day views by the FirstClass client.
This version supports the following features/functionality:
- Personal Calendars - Group Calendars - Resource Calendars - Location Calendars - Support for Calendar Events and Calendar Tasks - Delivery of calendar events to each participant (where participant type supported). - Permissions for Calendars - Simple reminders
Calendar Types
There are a number of new calendar types which this client supports.
The Personal Calendar is a user's calendar which is found on their Desktop. To create it if it is not yet present select File->Open->Calendar. This Personal Calendar is where you would create your own Calendar Events and Calendar Tasks.
A Group Calendar is equivalent to a conference in many ways in that it allows a calendar to be shared amongst a group of FirstClass users e.g. a department or a class.
A Resource Calendar allows resources such as overhead projectors or computers for example to have a calendar associated with them. These resources can then be added to personal or group calendar events.
A Location Calendar allows locations such as meeting rooms or classrooms to have a calendar associated with them. These locations can then be added to personal or group calendar events.
Calendar Events and Calendar Tasks
The client supports creation of calendar events and tasks. A calendar event is an item such as a meeting or birthday which you would mark in a diary. A calendar task is equivalent to a 'to do' item.
The FirstClass client allows you to create events and tasks by using the Message->New Calendar Event or Message->New Calendar Task command when a calendar view is active.
Delivery of calendar events to each participant
If you leave the Participants list empty then the event is local to your personal calendar. You can put an event into other people's calendars by entering their name into the Participants list. If a Participant is listed and they do not have a FirstClass Calendar, the event form is delivered to their Mailbox.
This Particpant field will accept a FirstClass Address and can be one of
Local user - Event is placed (linked) in calendar Remote name - Event is transmitted via gateway and placed in calendar Internet address - Event is sent via e-mail.
The sender is flagged of potential conflicts with a visual indicator (red bar) if you view the participants calendar.
To help plan a suitable time you can double click a Participant name to view their calendar, subject to the Permissions they have set. You can also right-click on the name and open the user's calendar.
When events appear in your calendar from other users they are marked with an unread flag. The client does not yet show this flag except in List view. If you change an event that has participants, the updated event is sent to each participant. If the participant has a calendar, the updated event is marked with an unread flag. If the participant is a FirstClass user with no calendar, the event form is updated and re-flagged. For non-FC users, a second copy of the event form is delivered.
Permissions for Calendars
Calendars have permissions lists which can be editted in the same manner as conference permissions.
Simple reminders
There is a mechanism to send a reminder for a calendar event.
If you are online at the time of the reminder, a Reminder form will appear. If you are not online at the time of the reminder, you get an e-mail in your Mailbox.
Enhanced document editor
This new FirstClass Client now includes an enhanced document editor. This enhanced document editor includes support for the following functionality:
- Ability to insert graphics in the body of FirstClass messages (when used with a FCIS/FCCC server version 5.700 or greater which has the Gold license installed). - View graphics in the body of FirstClass messages. - Insert horizontal rules in the body of FirstClass messages.
Audio record and playback support
This new FirstClass Client now includes support for audio record and playback. This feature includes support for the following functionality:
- Ability to record voice attachments directly to FirstClass messages (when used with a FCIS/FCCC server version 5.700 or greater which has the Gold license installed). - Playback of voice attachments to FirstClass messages (those created by the FirstClass client).
UDP/IP protocol support
Support for the UDP/IP protocol has been added to this client.
UDP support is similar to IPX and AppleTalk support in that it is a connectionless, datagram protocol, providing better flow control (resulting in better interactive response over slow links), but differs in that it is a native protocol of the Internet. UDP is best used when connecting over the Internet via a dialup IP connection to a FirstClass Intranet Server which supports it. Note - TCP/IP is still best used over an internal LAN which uses TCP/IP.
The server (version 5.700 or greater) will default to listen on a UDP port number of 810 for incoming UDP connections. This UDP port number has been officially assigned to FirstClass UDP by the IANA.
To use the UDP/IP protocol support in this client you will need to select the UDP-IP.FCP file from the Connect Via: popup in the client's Service Setup form for a settings file.
Other changes in this release over previous 5.506 version
- There have been a number of improvements to the menu layout. Known Problems
- A 6125 error message will be displayed when attempting to paste an image into a FirstClass message if the user is connected to a non-gold enabled server. - The client may hang if you attempt to print a message with a message body which contains a graphic that is larger than the page you are printing it on.
